Enar Ström
THE STORY BEGINS
In 1946, Enar Ström entered the textile world with determination and a creative spark. A young man from Sundsvall, with a background as a decorator at Stockholmsmagasinet, founds his own company, Firma Enar Ström, in Östersund. Shortly afterwards, he hires Evert Lindahl, an advertising artist and decorator who has recently returned to his hometown from Stockholm. This partnership would set the foundation for the company Frösö Handtryck and shape its future.
Early in the company's history, Enar Ström saw the potential in the growing tourism industry during the 1930s and 1940s, especially after statutory holidays were introduced. Tourists wanted to take memories of their travels with them in the form of souvenirs. This was an opening for textile printers to specialize in their products. Enar and his team began producing promotional prints, pennants and embroidered fabric badges to meet this need. They also developed a series of cloths and scarves with geographical motifs from Sweden's various landscapes, which became known as Landskapsduken.
During its heyday, Frösö Handtryck printed over 10,000 pennants with over 1,000 unique motifs. Their products became appreciated throughout the country and were exported to international markets, including Germany and America. The technique used, known as film printing, impressed customers and experts alike. This period was a flourishing time for textile printing in Sweden, and Frösö Handtryck was at the center of it.
