Colors and patterns are the passion of graphic designer Lotta Kühlhorn. The kitchen at home is pink and the oversized handbags are always extraordinary. A shelf paper from the 70s, a threadbare but oh-so-beautiful curtain, a beloved seashell - all serve as sources of inspiration for Lotta, who mainly works with book design but also makes illustrations and patterns.
Lotta Kühlhorn is one of Sweden's most beloved designers. She is part of our everyday lives. Her designs can be found almost everywhere: from patterns on fabrics and utility items, to book covers you have on your shelf.
PERGOLA
"My grandmother's sister Märta had a nice little pergola at her summer cottage, where there was a trellis for climbing plants that I remember much like this pattern. I also thought of chair seats, wicker and rattan, baskets and weaving.
It was fun to combine different colors. Green tape on yellow paper. Blue tape on red paper, or how about green tape on pink paper? The variations are endless, just like the colors of the trellis and the sky in Märta's pergola during different hours of the day."
SHOOTS IN THE MOONLIGHT
"I like artichokes a lot. Both because it is festive to eat but also because of the way the large plant looks. The contrasts between the prickly, almost dangerous leaves and the bulbous, tightly held shoots that almost look like a flower.
I originally painted them in black on greenish-blue, hence the name "Mushrooms in Moonlight", but here I've let them bloom in bright colors that I like very much."
